A report shows that Argentina exported a total amount of 424,034 tonnes of seafood in 2011 and it cost about 1, 365.5 million USD. This statistics represent a decline of 1.6 % in term of volume and an increase of 13 % in term of value compared to the previous year. In the year 2011, the largest export was the hake fish (hubbis, Merluccius), with 132,673 tonnes valued for more than 366.5 million USD. A new study reveals that eating oily fish is safe for young women and can radically reduce the risk of heart diseases. Norway exports of cod hits top record.

The cod fish is one of the most important marine fish in Norway. Cod is found in the northern reaches of the Atlantic Ocean and about 500, 000 tons of fish are captured each year.

In October the overseas sale of cod fish was of 157.5 million euro, it includes stockfish, salted and dried cod. Compared to last year an increase of 4% is visible and this rise is highly beneficial for the Norway export market.

Italia want to buy hake fish directly from Namibia

Last month during a meeting which was held in Italy, between the Namibian and the Italian businessmen, it was suggested that the new director of Food Import and Export Agency intend to import fish directly from Namibia. Mr. Alexandro Lamana said that it would be more practical and cheaper to import hake directly from Namibia rather than to get it through Spain.

According to Mr. Lamana, getting fish products from Namibia through Spain is very expensive and bulky and the surcharges make the fish products more expensive. The other issue that they have is that they do not receive the fish products that they ordered. If for example, Spain does not have hake in stock, they will send crabs or other products they have in stock. In other words, they are not 100% satisfied to deal with Spain concerning the seafood products as they always get leftovers.

The representative of Italy intends to visit Namibia and start dealing directly from there and find a way to form partners with the Namibian fisheries.

The fish products exported from Spain are the swordfish, crabs, hake and rock lobster. In Namibia, the average landings per year are approximately about 500 000metric tones and 90% of the fishes are exported to Europe, Asia, USA and the rest of Africa. The recorded value for 2009 was of 7 million Namibian dollars. The Marine Resources and Fisheries permanent secretary Ulitala Hiveluah suggested that the Italian business people begin to invest in the processing, marketing and exploring of the marine resources in Namibia. She highlighted that the Namibian Government will always continue to encourage foreigners to participate in the exploring of marine resources through joint beneficial scheme joint. She also added that there are great potential investments in the local fisheries industry especially for the large pelagic fish, seals and horse mackerel.

According to a report the Walleye and other sport fish contain more mercury that one could imagine. These fishes are found in the Great Lakes region and in certain parts of Michigan. However, their presence could be dangerous for consumers of these species.

Scientist studied the toxin in these sport fish as it could have harmful effects on pregnant women and children’s brain development. One of the officers in charge of the study said that Michigan has been under a mercury fish advisory for years and they are still not sure that the coming report will give an exact feedback about the level of mercury. Fisheries getting better in the African Nations.

Namibia – A new project has begun in Windhoek to improve and promote the main marine industry in the African countries. The project was launched by the (BCC) Benguela Current Commission and this mission consists of helping the countries to improve the management of the fisheries and carry out a well planned ecosystem approach. The three tagged countries are the Angola, South Africa and Namibia. These regions are the principal targets of the ECOFISH project as they are the areas which have the most important stocks of Horse Mackerel, Sardinella and Hake in Africa. At the world summit in 2002 the specific countries promise to apply the ecosystem approach to fisheries management and the ECOFISH would help them out to carry this task.

The project consists of improving the countries capacity to create and process new data. The ECOFISH will help to develop a better way of collecting new socio-economic data and make sure that information about fishing communities are taken into consideration. The ECOFISH project will be sponsor by the European Union and a contribution of €1.5 million will be available for year 2011 to 2015. This sponsorship of the Science Program will complement with the Benhuela Current Commission through the Norway Government.

Namibian Hake- An increase in total allowance catch for 2011/2012 season.

In Namibia, the Ministry of Marine Resources and Fisheries has recently announced good news for the seafood industry which exports hake products. The total allowance catch (TAC) for 2011/2012 season had an increase of 40,000 metrics tonnes, this is a beneficial news for the fishing sector as this new scheme might decrease the level of unemployment in the country and also concrete the employed persons in the fishing sector.

In the past years the main factors affecting the hake export market was mainly because of increased of fuel prices, poor demand for high quality products and poor currency prices. This recommendation has already been approved by the ministry of fisheries and marine resources. Besides, the catching of hake fish in Namibia has faced many difficulties in the past years due to exports difficulties.

According to the section 38 of the Marine Resources Act 27 of 2000, the TAC need to be increase in line with the law and this can only be done on a scientific basis with tangible evidences and advices.

Philippines –More than 750 tonnes of fish died due to heavy rain falls.

In Philippines a drastic situation arises due to the weather condition which put the fishing industry at great peril. Due to heavy rain during the weekend many cities of the country lost hundreds of fish from their lakes due to a drastic reduction of oxygen in the water. The Taal Lake situated in Manila city lost 750 tonnes of fishes. Moreover, the most affected fish were the Tilapia and the Milk fish which were bred fishes. This heart breaking event worries everyone as it’s a matter of concern for those who earned their living by fishing and other who are worried about their country hygienic conditions. The carcasses of fish are becoming increasingly difficult due to lack of space to bury the carcasses and due to decomposition of the corpses. Although the officials and sanitation are trying their utter best to get rid of these fishes, the Mayor of Talisay believed that there are quite much to do as there are just too many carcasses piled up at the edge of the lake.

Sudden death of hundred fish in Ogeechee River.

USA- A heart breaking event took place unknowingly along the Ogeechee River in Georgia. Hundreds of fish were found dead in the water without specific reasons. Investigation is still in progress to find out the specific causes of this alarming situation. Nevertheless, the authorities already informed the neighborhoods so as they disposed of necessary measures. Japan fishing industry badly affected by the natural calamities

Even two months after, the terrible tsunami and earthquake which hit Japan, the country is still seeking solutions to overcome this crisis. New objectives and tasks have been set up to improve the country conditions. The vice president of the Tokyo Electrical Power Company Mr. Muto said that their main target is to shutdown within 9 months. Statistics show about 25000 residents were victim of this catastrophe and millions of people were made homeless.

Mr. Muto said that the fishing industry was hugely affected and major parts of the coastline were wiped out. He also highlighted that Kesennuma port is among the 10 largest ports in Japan offering facilities such as refueling and maintenances. Fishing activities has drastically decreased even after the government has set back the facilities. Although $49 billion has been spent in cleaning affected areas, fishermen prefer to sail more than 60kms to feel more secure.

The Marine Conservative Society (MSC) says that the sellers should help buyers to make the right choice by dwindling fish stocks. Japan - High levels of radiation found in fish & vegetables.

Breaking news - The authorities in Tokyo have notice high level of radiation in spinach and fish near the damaged nuclear plant in the north east of Japan. The public broadcaster NHK stated that on Tuesday 26 April 2011, 2 600 to 3,200 of Becquerel’s per Kg of radioactive caesium was found in two samples of fish species. The fish is named sand lance and was caught off in Iwaki City and report says that the radiation level is of 5 to 6 times higher than a security limit.

Furthermore, on Sunday the local government has detected 960 Becquerel’s of caesium in spinach collected in Otama village in Fukushima region. The power station in Tokyo was severely damage after the earth quake and tsunami since then there has been leaking radiation. To set a safety standard for leafy vegetables the governments has ban some kind of export of fish and vegetables which has been harvested near the plant.

Due to high contaminated water workers were prevented to work near the nuclear plant and the government also highlighted that procedures to decontaminate the water will start in June.

Study says - cigarettes butts dangerous for fish

Research by scientists at San Diego State University found that cigarette butts are dangerous for fish yet these tiny pieces often end up as litter in most of our lakes ponds and rivers.

The study consisted of analyzing the effect of these litters on salt water fish and fresh water one. To be able to conclude the most harmful aspect this search, researcher divided the cigarettes in 3 categories:

ü Smoke cigarettes with a filter and tobacco residue.

ü Un-smoke cigarette filters without tobacco

ü smoke filters with no tobacco

The cigarettes butts were soaked in water for 24 hours with both saltwater fish and freshwater fish. It was found that the most dangerous one was smoked cigarettes with a filter and tobacco residue as 50 % of the fish placed in water died.

However, all three types of the cigarette were harmful to fish and contaminated the water. The study shows that the toxin in water is acutely present due to cigarette butts and represents a danger for marine life.
